Experience is required for leveling. When the player gets a certain amount of Experience, they will level up.
Experience is a direct result of players getting points. It is calculated based on the result of battles and is subject to multipliers, including how decisive the victory was and if the player has Deluxe, which would multiply all experience gained by two.
